Ellen Askey Assistant Editor

Ellen Askey is an assistant editor and filmmaker who works across documentary and narrative film. She began working with Art21 in August 2021, supporting the post-production of digital series and Art in the Twenty-First Century.

Through her work in film, Ellen explores the relationships between people, environment, science, and art. In prior documentary work, she collaborated with The STAGE Lab to develop and launch their NSF-supported documentary series, Curiosity: The Making of a Scientist, as co-director and lead editor of the pilot episode. For her B.A. thesis film, Kinoptia, Ellen explored a docu-fiction approach to foster new ways of listening. The piece brought her to film and interview in Granada, Chicago and Sarajevo, where she also interned with the Post-Conflict Research Center. In narrative film, she has written and directed various shorts, worked as 2nd assistant director on an upcoming indie feature, and freelanced as an editor and cinematographer, becoming a student semifinalist in the New York Cinematography Awards. Ellen has recently directed and edited a second short doc Downstream, produced by the STAGE Lab, and she is currently developing a feature screenplay Lacuna as co-writer and co-director. She holds a B.A. in Cinema and Media Studies from the University of Chicago.
