Malika Zouhali-Worrall Director

Malika Zouhali-Worrall is a British/Moroccan filmmaker based in New York. Her films examine the intimacy created by networks of care and community, whether through art, caregiving, or political action.

An Emmy Award-winning director, her directing credits include the feature-length documentaries, CALL ME KUCHU (2012, Berlin Film Festival, Netflix, BBC World) and THANK YOU FOR PLAYING (2015, Tribeca, POV/ITVS, News & Television Emmy Award), both of which were theatrically released to critical acclaim in the U.S. As an Emmy-nominated editor, she most recently edited THROUGH THE NIGHT (2020, Tribeca, POV), a feature-length film by Loira Limbal that was selected for the 2019 Sundance Edit & Story Lab, chosen as a Critic’s Pick by The New York Times and The Hollywood Reporter, and recently named as one of The Guardian’s Best Documentaries of 2020.

Malika’s episodic and short form directing credits include an hour-long episode of the long-running TV series Art in the Twenty-First Century, which will broadcast nationally in June 2023, as well as her recent short documentary VIDEO VISIT (2022), which was released by Field of Vision after festival screenings including SXSW, AFI Fest, Blackstar, and BAM Cinemafest. Malika has also directed short films for The New York Times OpDocs, French broadcaster ARTE, and PBS American Masters, which broadcast Malika’s film STRANGE GRACE: THE ART OF AMYRA LEÓN in 2020.

Malika’s films have been supported by the Sundance Film Institute, Cinereach, San Francisco Film, Field of Vision, Doc Society, The New York Times OpDocs, and Catapult Film Fund, among others.

Malika is a 2019 Chicken & Egg Awardee, a 2020 Sundance Momentum Fellow, a 2020 William Greaves Award recipient, and a 2021 Adobe Women at Sundance fellow.
