Art21’s 21st year was a milestone.
Throughout 2018, millions of viewers from around the world tuned in to watch among the twenty-three newly released artist portraits from each of our series: Art in the Twenty-First Century, Extended Play, and New York Close Up. Even more viewers—teachers, students, artists, and others hungry for creative inspiration—continued to enjoy films year-round from our 60-hour library on Art21.org and via the newly launched Art21.live. Thousands more joined our Screening Society partners for viewings of our latest television season hosted in spaces across the globe like at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, and at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design in Manila, Philippines. We are humbled by having the opportunity to bring the creative processes of these extraordinary artists to screens of all sizes worldwide.
In celebration of Art21’s rich history, we returned to the printed word this year with the release of new volume of artist interviews, Being an Artist, drawing from our comprehensive library of artist conversations. Copies have been flying off the shelves.
Like years previous, we served a vast network of communities with a steady stream of artist conversations, screenings, and educator workshops. But, in an organizational first, we also threw a rousing party in celebration of our 21st birthday—cake and all.
Our 21st anniversary year is ripe with memories that we’ll carry with us into our 22nd year and beyond. We can’t wait to share what we have in store for the new year.
Thank you to everyone who spent time with Art21 this year—in person or online. We would not have been able have such a productive year without your viewership and support. From all of us at Art21, we wish you a healthy and happy new year.
