Accessibility at Art21
Accessibility at Art21
Art21 is committed to access as a shared responsibility and recognizes accessibility as an ongoing practice rather than a one-time checklist. We strive to align www.art21.org with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines WCAG 2.2 Level AA, centering the needs of disabled people across a wide range of access experiences. Core website page templates have been audited and remediated, resulting in substantive improvements that support greater autonomy, usability, and choice, including:
- Replacing an inaccessible video player with one that supports screen reader and keyboard access
- Adding controls that allow users to pause or stop moving carousels
- Improving color contrast and the use of color to support multiple visual access needs
- Strengthening heading structure and table formatting for clearer navigation and comprehension
- Introducing a reduced motion feature to reduce vestibular and cognitive fatigue
Accessibility work is ongoing and evolving. Current efforts include adding alternative text to images and audio description to videos to expand access for blind, low-vision, and DeafBlind users. We also acknowledge existing access barriers that are not fully within our control at this time, including limited visible focus indicators in Safari on macOS and screen reader accessibility challenges with certain dropdown buttons on the library page. These issues have been documented and will be prioritized as part of a future website refresh.
Art21 remains committed to listening, learning, and improving in partnership with the disability community. For questions, feedback, or requests for accessibility support, please email accessibility [AT] art21.org or fill out our contact form.
