Loie Hollowell experiences pleasure and pain
Painter Loie Hollowell candidly recounts the corporeal memories that have informed her work: the artist’s experience with abortion in her twenties, and the mental preparation for and experience of giving birth to her second child.
“I’m a body that is pregnant, but isn’t necessarily the woman or the pregnant body that society may put onto me,” says the artist in our “New York Close Up” film. “I’m experiencing pleasure and pain that anyone can experience, and that’s what I’m putting into the work.

Virtual Teacher Workshop: Explore Community
Join Art21 for a virtual teacher workshop on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 6:30 PM E.T.
In celebration of the new Explore function on Art21.org, Art21 will be hosting education programs around the themes, mediums, and narratives collected by Art21 staff. The “Community” theme groups artists who collapse the boundaries between artist and audience, and facilitate making by, with, and for communities. Jaimie Warren, Azikiwe Mohammed, and Creative Growth Art Center are among the artists utilizing this theme.
