12 women who are art superheroes
“So much emphasis is put on how beautiful you are and not a lot of emphasis is put on what you can do and how smart you are,” said Margaret Kilgallen. “I’d like to change the emphasis of what’s important when looking at a woman.”
Our Super Heroines playlist honors bold women artists. Through practices unparalleled and unprecedented, these artists shatter the expectations of what art can be, leading the way for the next generation of art heroes.

How can a promise stimulate innovation?
Recalling her experiences renting a studio space in Manhattan’s Chinatown, artist Wong Kit Yi investigates models for converting collectors into patrons in a new interview with Art21.
“I find this invisible contractual relationship, bound not by law but by honor and respect, extremely interesting,” says the artist. “This interests me because I want to understand what a promise could mean over a long period of time.”
Janine Antoni makes work as a form of healing
Inspired by small religious votive charms called milagros, Janine Antoni grafted together resin body parts to explore the meanings created by two impossible juxtapositions.
“Making work is a form of healing,” said the artist. “In making, I can somehow locate myself in relationship to others and my environment.”
“If somebody comes along and my work resonates for them, that’s when I feel less alone—that I’m not as strange as I feel.”
