Art21 at the Movies is a two-day event showcasing film premieres and artist-curated screenings that merge the worlds of film and contemporary art. Taking place in NYC on Wednesday, September 13, at Metrograph Theater from 7:00-11:00 pm and Friday, September 15, at SVA Theatre from 5:00-10:00 pm, Art21 at the Movies will offer attendees an opportunity to develop a deeper connection to the artists and filmmakers of Art21 productions as well as several other award-winning filmmakers. Opening Night of Art21 at the Movies at Metrograph is a fundraising evening that will kick off with a red carpet hour to welcome artists, filmmakers, trustees, and Art21 supporters. The night will feature the premiere of a never-before-seen Art21 digital film alongside the premiere screening of “Friends and Strangers,” the third and final episode of Season 11 of Art in the Twenty-First Century featuring Linda Goode Bryant, Miranda July, Christine Sun Kim, and Cannupa Hanska Luger. “Friends and Strangers” filmmaker Chiemi Karasawa will grace the event, as well as featured artists Linda Goode Bryant, Miranda July and Cannupa Hanska Luger. Opening Night will also feature the premiere of “Esteban Cabeza de Baca’s Time Travels,” a New York Close Up episode directed by César Martínez Barba, with remarks from the artists and filmmakers. The evening will culminate with an afterparty energized by DJ Jennifly, refreshments, cocktails, and photo ops with artists and filmmakers.
The second night of Art21 at the Movies at SVA Theatre features the 3D film premiere of “Westermann: Memorial to the Idea of Man If He Was an Idea” followed by a conversation with Trenton Doyle Hancock and Aaron Curry; an hour of films curated by Miranda July; a second screening of “Friends & Strangers;” and a collection of films that pay homage to art and artists.
Art21 at the Movies’ Premiere Committee includes the Art21 Board of Trustees, Garth Greenan Gallery, Agnes Gund, and Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.
