Art21 to Release New Film: Richard Mosse: What the Camera Cannot See

Art21 to Release New Film:
“Richard Mosse: What the Camera Cannot See”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, November 17, 2022

New York, New York – Art21 is proud to announce the premiere of “Richard Mosse: What the Camera Cannot See” on Wednesday, November 30 at 12:00 PM ET. The penultimate 2022 release of Art21’s digital film series, Extended Play, “Richard Mosse: What the Camera Cannot See” offers a look into the work and creative process of the New York-based artist.

“Climate change exists outside of human perception,” says Richard Mosse. “I’m interested in trying to find a way to express deeply complex things by looking at these loaded landscapes. Bigger subjects that the camera can’t necessarily see.” Mosse documents humanitarian crises and environmental catastrophes by making the unseen visible. This film follows Mosse and his collaborators Ben Frost and Trevor Tweeten as they use highly specialized surveillance technologies and scientific tools to evoke deeper understanding and motivate audiences to act.

“Art21 goes to great lengths to film an artist at work, but the complex and often dangerous sites within the Amazon rainforest where Richard Mosse and his collaborators were working proved to be beyond our reach,” says Ian Forster, Art21 Senior Producer. “That challenge became an opportunity when Richard offered to document his process on our behalf. The incredible behind-the-scenes footage seen in this film was captured by Richard himself and other members of his team.”

Tune in to the premiere of “Richard Mosse: What the Camera Cannot See” on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at 12PM ET at Art21.org and on Art21’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/art21org. To learn more, email Art21 Manager of Communications, Hannah DeGarmo, at [email protected].
