Art21 to Release New Film: “Charles Gaines: Systems & Structures”

Art21 to Release New Film: “Charles Gaines: Systems & Structures”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, December 8, 2022

New York, New York – Art21 is proud to announce the premiere of “Charles Gaines: Systems & Structures” on Wednesday, December 14 at 12:00 PM ET. The final 2022 release of Art21’s digital film series, Extended Play, “Charles Gaines: Systems & Structures” offers a look into the work and creative process of the Los Angeles-based artist.

“I wanted to make a type of work whose production is a consequence of a system, rather than my imagination,” says artist Charles Gaines. Investigating the production of knowledge and culture, Gaines uses rule-based systems to create paintings, drawings, musical compositions, and sculptures. Culminating in the completion of Moving Chains (2022), a 100-foot-long public sculpture on Governors Island in New York City, this film traces the connections the artist makes between our lived experience and the systems that structure them.

Charles Gaines asks us to think critically about the systems and structures we live within — to see the ways in which they are socially constructed, and to question the hierarchies that they uphold,” says Sue Ding, Co-Director. “We had the tremendous opportunity to follow Charles over the course of this year as he worked on his first major public art project, including a performance in Times Square and a monumental kinetic sculpture on Governors Island.”

Tune in to the premiere of “Charles Gaines: Systems & Structures” on Wednesday, December 14 2022, at 12PM ET at Art21.org and on Art21’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/art21org. To learn more, email Art21 Manager of Communications, Hannah DeGarmo, at [email protected].
