New Video: Avery Singer Blends Art History’s Past and Future

In a new film from our New York Close Up digital series, artist Avery Singer shares the intricate process behind her complex acrylic works. Mixing traditional methods with digital technologies, Singer uses masking tape and an airbrush to realize designs she’s constructed using the 3D modeling program SketchUp.

The resulting black and white paintings feature futuristic robot-like figures caught up in narratives inspired by conventional art world tropes.

“You can take traditional tools and employ them in the way that they’ve been intended to be employed for 500 years, and then in the next hour incorporate some kind of new technology…
The juxtaposition of all these things produces meaning.”
