Announcing “Summer of Shorts”

Update | August 7, 2017: All ten Summer of Shorts films have premiered and are available to watch here on Art21.org. See the links below for each individual film, or watch all ten films back-to-back with the Summer of Shorts playlist.

We are very excited to announce our first-ever programming series entirely dedicated to our digital films: Summer of Shorts. Starting today, we are releasing ten films over the course of ten weeks, with a new film premiering every Friday through August 4.

As part of Summer of Shorts, we are introducing five artists to the New York Close Up series roster. You’ve already met Raúl de Nieves, and today you can get to know Bronx-based painter Avery Singer. The three additional artists are video and installation artist Meriem Bennani, painter Jordan Casteel, and performance and installation artist Aki Sasamoto. Summer of Shorts will also include a new film featuring artist Caroline Woolard.

We would also like to introduce you to a refreshed version of our longest-running digital series, Exclusive—now called Extended PlayLaunched in 2008, the series has featured nearly 100 artists to date and provides an in-depth look at critical moments in the lives of contemporary artists. Five new films will premiere in the Extended Play digital series as part of Summer of Shorts, featuring artists Stan Douglas, Theaster Gates, Liz Larner, Jeff Wall, and Chris Ware.

Finally, we will also be publishing special digital content alongside the new film releases, including Instagram takeovers by New York Close Up artist Tommy Hartung, as well as thematic and guest-contributed playlists featuring films from the ever-expanding Art21 Library.

See the full list of upcoming films below and get ready for an art-infused summer!
