Art21 to Release New Film: “Xin Liu’s Inward Expeditions”
New York, New York – Art21 is proud to announce the premiere of “Xin Liu’s Inward Expeditions” on Wednesday, March 13, at 12:00 PM ET. The second 2024 release of Art21’s digital film series, New York Close Up, “Xin Liu’s Inward Expeditions” follows artist Xin Liu as she bridges the realms of art and science.
“There’s something about expedition,” says Xin Liu in the film. “It’s very beautiful but, at the same time, it’s a very lonely journey. There is this inevitable death that happens along with the growth that we so desire for.”
In the film, artist Xin Liu looks inward through her diverse body of work which includes frost-coated sculptures, a bubbling fountain of crude oil, a robotic container for her wisdom tooth, performance in outer space, and much more. Through these works, Liu teases out the tensions between the indefinable qualities of humanity and the underlying drives of scientific progress, while demonstrating that science and culture are inseparable in their advancement.
“In the days we spent filming with Xin, we often joked that the title of this film should be ‘How to Make Anything with Xin Liu,'” says Andrea Chung, Director and Art21 Associate Producer. “It’s a marvel how she works in art and science not as two distinct, contradictory disciplines, but rather as two languages in which she is equally fluent and effective.”
