Art21 Releases New Film: “Azikiwe Mohammed is a Guy Who Makes Stuff”

New York, New York – Art21 is proud to announce the premiere of “Azikiwe Mohammed is a Guy Who Makes Stuff” on March 23 at 12:00 PM ET. The second 2022 release of Art21’s award-winning digital film series, New York Close Up, “Azikiwe Mohammed is a Guy Who Makes Stuff” offers a look into the work and creative processes of the New York City-based artist.
“The word artist is a little funky,” says Azikiwe Mohammed. “I would self-describe as a guy who makes stuff.” Mohammed works in a range of mediums and skill sets from painting and puppets to furniture and tapestries, informed by the unpretentious aesthetics of the Black homes and spaces he traverses. Animated by Mohammed’s humor and energy, this short documentary film captures an artist charting a creative path uniquely his own, sharing the fruits of his labor with the communities of New York City.
“Azikiwe is such a prolific artist with work that is both thought-provoking and accessible,” says Nick Ravich, Art21 Director of Video Programming and Production. “This film highlights how art can be used to connect us and its potential to provide creative approaches to positively impacting people’s lives.”
New York Close Up (NYCU) is devoted to capturing early career artists living and working in New York City. NYCU films have been accepted and honored by over 100 film festivals including the BlackStar and DOC NYC film festivals as well as the Academy Awards qualifying Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. NYCU films have also been honored with 2 Webby Award nominations and 5 Vimeo Staff Picks. Most recently, NYCU films have been accepted at the 2022 Miami Film Festival.
