Art21 Releases First New York Close Up Film of 2022 Featuring Tommy Kha

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, February 25, 2022

New York, New York – Art21 is proud to announce the premiere of “Tommy Kha’s Bits & Pieces” on March 9 at 12:00 PM ET. The first 2022 release of Art21’s award-winning digital film series, New York Close Up, “Tommy Kha’s Bits & Pieces” offers a look into the work and creative processes of the Brooklyn-based photographer.

“Much of my work and my family’s history is just that– it’s bits and pieces,” says Tommy Kha. “It’s a continuous sourcing of information and materials and anything that we can glean of our past.” From his childhood backyard to his grandfather’s grave to Memphis’ famed Elvis Week gatherings, this film follows Tommy Kha photographing throughout the city, as he reconnects with his hometown and comes to terms with fundamental questions about his self and chosen medium.

“As another Asian-American inextricably linked to the Deep South, seeing Memphis through Tommy’s eyes was a treat,” says Jia Li, director of the New York Close Up episode. “And given how filmmaking allows me to detach, I could wait and watch, making sense of how Tommy eased in and out of this potent, evocative landscape as a human, a photographer, an artist, and a native son.”

New York Close Up (NYCU) is devoted to capturing early career artists living and working in New York City. NYCU films have been accepted and honored by over 100 film festivals including the BlackStar and DOC NYC film festivals as well as the Academy Awards qualifying Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. NYCU films have also been honored with 2 Webby Award nominations and 5 Vimeo Staff Picks. Most recently, NYCU films have been accepted at the 2022 Miami Film Festival.
