Art21 is now accepting applications for our fall 2025 internship program!
Art21 is a celebrated global leader in presenting thought-provoking and sophisticated content about contemporary art, and the go-to place to learn first-hand from the artists of our time. A nonprofit organization, Art21’s mission is to inspire a more creative world through the works and words of contemporary artists.
Internships at Art21 offer individuals a unique opportunity to learn about contemporary art, art education, public programs, fundraising, and arts administration. Interns are an important part of the Art21 community and are given exposure to all aspects of the organization.
Art21 offers a stipend to all participating interns.
Editorial and Research
Art21 is seeking an Editorial and Research Intern in the Curatorial Department. The internship will run from September 29th to December 15th, 2025. The deadline to apply is September 15th, 2025.
Art12’s Editorial and Research intern will work closely with the Associate Curator and the Curatorial Assistant to execute a range of short-and long-term projects related to the larger curatorial team. Internships at Art21 offer individuals a unique opportunity to learn about contemporary art, curatorial work, art education, and public programs. Interns will leave the internship with a greater knowledge and appreciation of contemporary art and artists, improved writing and organizational skills, and experience with public speaking and presentations. Interns are an important part of the Art21 community and are given exposure to all aspects of the organization.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research on contemporary artists for Art21’s various programs
- Prepare and present research to the Art21 curatorial team
- Maintain database and demographic information
- Provide research support for curatorial writing and web content
- Draft artist biographies and episode descriptions for upcoming Art21 films
- Provide support with administrative tasks as needed.
Applicants should have a high attention to detail and be organized, motivated, and self-directed. Strong writing, editorial, and research skills are required. Preference is given to a candidate with knowledge of contemporary art and artists.
Required skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Excellent people skills
- Self-directed research skills, primarily focused on contemporary art and artists
- Experience writing about contemporary art with an emphasis on accessible and educational writing
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to meet deadlines and organize time efficiently and independently.
- Proficiency with Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, and Slides) or equivalent word processing software
Interns are asked to commit to working two days per week, both remotely and in person, in NYC. Additional programs, events, and other requirements may arise. Applicants should be prepared to provide their own computer, equipped with video conferencing capabilities, for the duration of the internship.
Interns receive a $3,168 stipend for the 12-week internship, disbursed on the first and last weeks of the internship.
