From the Executive Director: Finding Love in Art and Art Making

No matter who you are or what you do—young or old, artist, educator, essential worker or not—the key to living through this uncertain time is to build on the familiar. Keeping to a routine that mirrors the old one will make this deeply unfamiliar time feel not so jarring.

One group suffering the break in continuity is the student-teacher dyad. The emotional and social support that teachers give to their students cannot be easily transported online. We feel for both sides—and the parents who are caught in the middle like never before.

The pandemic has been a catalyst for learning across all domains, from mask making to recipe hunting, to the more obvious forms of remote learning happening in the socially-distanced, home-school classroom. A shift normally many years in the making has taken place overnight; education has been transformed.

At Art21, we feel fortunate to have a front row seat to this unparalleled change. We are continually inspired to see how teachers, parents, and students alike have been innovating, turning regular family meals into Art21 viewing parties, encouraging drawing as a thoughtful, meditative, and curative mode, and for one teacher, finding the love in art.

#Art21GreatestHits: Mary Heilmann in “Fantasy”

Our latest #Art21GreatestHits staff pick features Mary Heilmann‘s segment from our “Fantasy” episode, as selected by Lolita Fierro, Associate Director, Major Gifts and Special Events.

“Every time I’ve watched this segment, I feel like I sat down with a longtime friend, transparent about her creative process and hypnotizing with her brushstrokes,” says Lolita. “She says that art has a power to transport us ‘in a soulful, rich way.'”
