In a new film from our New York Close Up digital series, artist Meriem Bennani subverts audience expectations of both pop culture and her Muslim community with unexpected playfulness and pathos, using social media-inspired effects.
The film, the fourth in our Summer of Shorts programming series, takes us from the artist’s native Morocco to her first museum exhibition at MoMA PS1, to her first large-scale public art project that lit up the Barclays Center oculus screen in February and March of this year.
“I feel like I have a hard time connecting to anything that doesn’t have humor,” says the artist, “because for me humor is like survival.”
